Playa Del Carmen is a small touristic town on the Yucatán Peninsula's Riviera Mayan strip. It is famous for its scenic beaches, shopping and night life. Playa Del Carmen offers a wide range of things to do, from relaxing on the beaches or exploring the town, to amazing day trips to other local destinations. Here are 8 things I recommend doing whilst visiting Playa Del Carmen.
1 Walk down 5th Avenue - AKA La Quinta
This is the main street of Playa Del Carmen and can't be missed. It is lined with all types of shops, restaurants and bars. The bright colours of the street give it a great character and culture.
2 Xplor Park
For the more adventurous, Xplor park is an amazing tourist park to visit whilst in Playa Del Carmen. Just a short drive from the city (and if you book a tour with them they will pick you up) Xplor park offers all types of adventurous activities such as zip-lining, swimming through caves, driving amphibious vehicles and rafting.
3 The Beach
You can't miss the beach here, it's iconic. White sand and refreshing aqua blue water, what's not to love? I definitely recommend checking the beach out to cool down on a hot day.
4 Swim in a Cenote
Cenotes are famous on the Yacatan Peninsula. They are beautiful natural sink holes that can be found all around this area of Mexico. The water is cool and refreshing, swimming in one of the cenotes is something I highly recommend checking out whilst in Mexico.
5 Chitchen Itza
Visiting the Mayan ruins of Chitchen Itza is a great day trip. Around a 2 hour drive from Playa Del Carmen, it is a magnificent Mayan archaeological site. A guided tour will give you some great information on the Mayan history and background behind the site, as well as allowing you to visit the amazing ancient pyramid which has been named one if the seven wonders of the modern world.
About an hour away from Playa Del Carmen, Tulum is a small town that is worth a day trip. Famous for its beautiful beaches which are surrounded by old Mayan ruins, Tulum is well worth exploring whilst in Mexico.
7. Try some Mexican food
You cannot go to Mexico without trying some local food. Although Playa Del Carmen is rather touristic and offers all types of cuisines, make sure to try some local specialties. My favourite had to be the guacamole and tacos.
8. Go Shopping
Whether you want markets, souvenirs, local or international brands, there are numerous options for shopping in Playa Del Carmen, all offering a lot, depending what you are after. 5th Avenue is the main street of the city and offers the most shopping.
